Migrating from Gmail
You can move your email straight from Gmail to onmeil.eu via IMAP. For calendar and contacts, Google has some restrictions that prevent them from being moved automatically — but you can export them manually and import them as files.
In short
- Email — automatic via IMAP (set up a Google app password first)
- Contacts — export as a
.vcffile from Google, then upload it to onmeil.eu - Calendar — export as an
.icsfile from Google, then upload it to onmeil.eu
Email (automatic via IMAP)
To move your email, you need a Google app password. It's a security key that lets onmeil.eu copy your inbox without storing your Google password.
Get ready in Google
Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google account. Google requires this before you can create an app password.
Open 2-Step Verification →Create a new app password. Use "onmeil.eu" as the label.
Open App passwords →Copy the 16-character code that Google shows in a yellow box. You'll only see it this one time.
How to run the import
- Go to Settings → Import
- Choose Google / Gmail
- Enter your Gmail address
- Paste the 16-character app password into the password field
- Select Email (leave contacts and calendar unchecked — see below)
- Click Start import
The import runs in the background. You can keep using onmeil.eu as usual while it works. How long it takes depends on how much email you have.
Contacts (manual export + upload)
Google doesn't let other services pull your contacts directly without a special OAuth approval that we haven't launched yet. For now, you can export them yourself:
Export from Google Contacts
- Open contacts.google.com
- Select the contacts you want to move (or all of them)
- Click Export in the left-hand menu
- Choose the vCard (for iOS contacts) format
- Click Export and save the
.vcffile
Import to onmeil.eu
- Go to Settings → Import
- Click Upload file
- Choose the
.vcffile you just downloaded - Confirm
Your contacts show up in Contacts after a moment.
Calendar (manual export + upload)
Same reason as for contacts — for now, Google doesn't allow direct syncing without extended OAuth.
Export from Google Calendar
- Open calendar.google.com
- Click the gear icon → Settings
- In the left-hand menu, select the calendar you want to export
- Click Export calendar to download an
.icsfile
(or use Import & export → Export at the top of Settings to get all your calendars in a single zip)
Import to onmeil.eu
- Go to Settings → Import
- Click Upload file
- Choose the
.icsfile you downloaded - Confirm
Your events show up in the Calendar after a moment.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my email in Google after the import?
Nothing. The import is a copy — your original Gmail account stays untouched.
Does Google charge anything for app passwords or exports?
No, it's all free with Google.
Can I run everything at once?
Email via IMAP and the file uploads can run in parallel. Start with email — it takes the longest — and kick off the file uploads while it's still working.
What if the Gmail import stops?
Check that the app password was copied correctly (no spaces) and that 2-Step Verification is still on. You can restart the import from Settings → Import.
Still can't get it to work?
Send us a message via onmeil.eu/kontakt — we'll help you through it.
