Folders
Folders help you stay organized in Files. You can create as many as you need and put files (and other folders) inside them.
Create a new folder
- Go to Files
- Click New folder at the top (or in the empty state)
- Type a name for the folder
- Press Enter or Create
The folder appears in the list right away. Click it to open it and add files.
Move files between folders
On a computer:
- Drag and drop — select the file in the list and drag it to the folder you want to move it to. The folder highlights when you hover over it.
- You can drag several files at once if you select them first
On mobile, or if drag-and-drop doesn't work:
- Use the Move to… action from the file menu (shown as "Use drag and drop to move" — full mobile move is coming in a later version)
Navigate the folder structure
- Use the left sidebar to switch between the top-level shortcuts: My files, Recent, Starred, Shared with me, Trash
- Click a folder in the list to open it
- Use the breadcrumb navigation at the top to go up one or more levels
- Click "My files" in the breadcrumb to jump back to the top
What's in each default folder
| Shortcut | Contents |
|---|---|
| My files | All your files, organized the way you keep them |
| Recent | Files saved, opened, or changed recently |
| Starred | Files you've marked with a star — quick to find again |
| Shared with me | Files and folders others have shared with you |
| Trash | Deleted files and folders, recoverable for 30 days |
Delete a folder
- Click the folder in the list to select it
- Click the Delete icon (or choose it from the More actions menu)
- Confirm: "Delete the folder "{name}"? You can recover it from Trash for 30 days."
Everything inside the folder goes to the trash along with it. You can recover the whole folder from there, or delete it permanently.
Tips
- Fewer folders is better. Search and Recent cover a lot of needs without a deep folder structure
- Use stars for files you come back to often — no matter which folder they're in
- Check Trash before deleting permanently if you're unsure
