meil for desktop
The meil desktop app keeps your files safe on onmeil.eu — automatically, in the background.
Right now: Mac only
The app is currently available for Mac (macOS). Windows is on the way, and will get the same features.
Download the app
You'll find the app at download.onmeil.eu.
The app does two things, and it helps to understand the difference:
| Sync folder | Backup | |
|---|---|---|
| What | One folder kept identical between your computer and onmeil.eu | Folders that are uploaded to onmeil.eu as a safe, separate copy |
| Direction | Both ways (change something in one place, and it changes in the other) | Upload only (computer → meil) |
| If you delete locally | You're asked whether it should be deleted on meil too | The copy on meil is kept – never removed automatically |
| Good for | Files you work on across several devices | Folders you want a safe copy of |
Getting started
- Download the app from download.onmeil.eu (
.dmgfile for Mac), install it and open it. - Click Log in. Your browser opens, where you log in to your meil account.
- Your computer is linked to your account. The app can now keep your files in sync.
Each computer is linked to one meil account. If the app tries to upload to the wrong account, it stops and lets you know – your files never end up on someone else's account.
The sync folder
This is the meil folder on your computer. Everything you put here is kept up to date between this computer and onmeil.eu – both ways. New files, changes and moves sync automatically in the background.
- Put a file in the folder → it's uploaded and shows up on onmeil.eu and on your other devices.
- Change a file → the new version syncs.
- You can change which folder is the sync folder under Settings.
When you delete a file locally
meil never deletes anything on the server by itself. If you delete a file in the sync folder, you get a choice:
- Delete on meil too – the file is moved to the trash on meil (can be restored for 30 days). This is the default.
- Bring it back here – changed your mind? The file is downloaded to your computer again.
Backup
Here you add folders you want to keep safe. They're uploaded to onmeil.eu as a separate, protected copy, kept apart from the sync folder and from "Files" on onmeil.eu.
- The copy stays up to date: if you change a file locally, the copy is updated.
- If you delete a file locally, the copy on meil is kept – it's never removed automatically.
- Each computer gets its own group ("This device"), so you can see which backups come from which computer.
- Backups are read-only on onmeil.eu – they can't be deleted, renamed or moved by accident from onmeil.eu.
Per-folder history
Click History on a folder to see the files backed up from it. If a file couldn't be backed up, it's shown in its own section – "Couldn't be backed up" – with the file name and the reason (e.g. "not enough storage"), so you know exactly what's missing and why.
Stop backing up a folder
You can stop backing up a folder from this computer at any time. The copy already on meil is kept – you just stop sending new changes.
The home screen (Sync)
The home screen shows the status right away:
- Everything is synced – your computer and meil are in step. You see the number of folders and files that are safely stored.
- A separate line for backups: "🛡 N folders · M files backed up", or "⚠ … couldn't" if something didn't upload – so the home screen never hides a failed backup.
- While something is uploading or downloading, it's shown live.
Activity
The Activity tab shows what's happened – uploads, downloads, moves and backups. Each line has a small label that tells you where it belongs:
- Sync – relates to the sync folder
- Backup – relates to a backed-up folder
That way you can easily see what's tied to what.
Settings
- Account – which plan you're on and how much storage you're using, with an Upgrade at my.onmeil.eu button when you need more space. This is also where you log out.
- Sync folder – view or change which folder is synced.
- Detailed debug log – off by default. The log doesn't show file names. Turn it on only when you're reproducing an error for support – then the log includes file names.
- Version and Help (opens this documentation).
The menu icon (up in the menu bar)
The meil icon in the menu bar (Mac: top right; Windows: bottom right) gives you a quick menu while the app runs in the background:
- Show meil – open the app window
- Go to onmeil.eu – open onmeil.eu in your browser
- Open the meil folder – open the sync folder
- Help – this documentation
- About meil – version and info
- Open log – open the log folder (for troubleshooting)
- Quit – close the app
Storage and upgrading
There's no separate size limit per file – the only thing that limits you is the total storage on your meil account.
When your account is full, the app lets you know with "Not enough storage on meil" and points you to my.onmeil.eu to upgrade. meil never deletes your backups to free up space – you decide.
Error messages – what they mean
The app always shows messages you can understand, never technical error codes. The most common ones:
| Message | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Not enough storage on meil | Your account is full. Log in to my.onmeil.eu and upgrade. |
| N file(s) couldn't be synced yet – retrying automatically | Temporary – the app retries on its own. |
| N file(s) couldn't be read | meil couldn't read the file from disk (e.g. moved/locked). |
| N file(s) changed during upload – retrying | The file changed while it was uploading; it'll be picked up again. |
| Your session has expired. Log in again | Log in again. |
| No connection to meil | Check your internet connection and try again. |
| There's a problem on meil right now | Temporary server error – try again shortly. |
One failed file never stops the rest – the other files sync as normal, and the one that failed is retried automatically.
Automatic updates
The app checks for new versions at startup. If there's an update, you get a discreet message with a download button – you decide when to update. Updates are signed and verified, so you know they come from meil.
Security and privacy
- The app is signed and notarized as WAYSCloud AS.
- Each computer is linked to your own meil account; your files never end up on someone else's account.
- The log does not show file names unless you turn on detailed debugging yourself.
Mac and Windows
The app is currently available for Mac (macOS). Windows is on the way – with the same features. On Windows, the meil icon will sit at the bottom right in the taskbar instead of up in the menu bar.
