Device management
Device management in meil Business is a free, read-only overview of your organization's work computers. It brings technical inventory and security signals together so administrators can more easily spot devices that need attention.
The service does not provide remote control, remote wipe, software deployment, or remote operating-system and app updates.
Who has access?
Device management is available only to business workspaces. Administrators can activate the service, add devices, and view the information. Regular users cannot access the overview.
What does Device management show?
Data comes from each device's Meil MDM agent. Available fields vary by operating system, hardware, and what the device reports.
- Devices: name, operating system, status, and when the device last checked in
- Hardware: model, manufacturer, serial number, processor, and memory when reported
- Storage and battery: available disk space and battery status where the platform supports it
- Network: local IP address, MAC address and, when available, public IP address and approximate location based on that IP address
- Security: disk encryption and your organization's compliance checks
- Software: installed apps, libraries, and tools with their versions
- Vulnerabilities: known CVEs that match reported software and version
Device management is an operations overview, not a guarantee that a device is secure or that a CVE is exploitable in your environment.
Get started
- Sign in to Admin as an administrator.
- Open Device management and activate the overview for the workspace.
- Select Add device when setup is ready.
- Choose a platform and install Meil MDM on the work computer.
- Usually wait about one minute after installation. The device appears automatically when the agent reports in.
You can install it yourself or send an installation task to another active administrator. The email is sent in the recipient's preferred language when it is saved.
Install Meil MDM
Download only from the Admin window or download.onmeil.eu. An administrator must be signed in to get the installation instructions and connect the device to the correct workspace.
macOS
- Select macOS and download the
.pkgfile. - Open it on the Mac and complete installation. Enter an administrator password if macOS asks for it.
- Wait for the first report in Device management.
Windows
- Select Windows and download the
.msifile. - Open it and follow the installation wizard.
- Windows may show an additional security confirmation. Before continuing, check that the file came from the signed-in Admin page and that the publisher is WAYSCloud AS.
- Wait for the first report in Device management.
Debian and Ubuntu
- Select Linux .deb in Admin.
- Copy the command into a terminal. It adds Meil MDM's signed APT repository and installs the package.
- Select Create one-time code and paste it when the terminal asks for it.
The code can be used once and expires after 15 minutes. Share it only with the person enrolling the device, through an approved channel.
Fedora, RHEL, and other RPM-based systems
- Select Linux .rpm in Admin.
- Copy the command into a terminal. It adds Meil MDM's signed DNF repository and installs the package.
- Create a one-time code and paste it when the terminal asks for it.
The one-time code connects that Linux device to the right workspace. It is not a user login and must not be stored in a script or shared terminal history.
Reading the overview
The main page shows device count, connected devices, encryption status, deviations, and a prioritized overview of reported vulnerabilities. The numbers are filters: select a number to narrow the device list.
Open a device to see its details. There are four tabs:
| Tab | What you find there |
|---|---|
| Overview | User and ownership, hardware, storage, battery, local and public network, security status, and agent data. |
| Compliance | Your organization's security checks and which of them are failing on the device. |
| Software | Installed applications, versions, technical packages, and relevant CVEs. The default view prioritizes items that need review. |
| Activity | Events related to the device, such as enrollment and changes to ownership or policies. |
Vulnerabilities and software
A CVE match means reported software and version match a known vulnerability. It does not automatically mean the issue is exploitable on that particular device. Use severity, whether the program is in use, and the availability of an updated version to prioritize follow-up.
In Software, open a software group to see versions, CVEs, CVSS, any CISA and EPSS signals, and a recommended updated version where one is known.
The Request update button requests fresh software inventory at the device's next check-in. It does not update the device's software or operating system.
Privacy and access
Device management shows technical work-device data to administrators in the same workspace. Approximate location is based on a public IP address, not GPS. Information can be incomplete if a device is disconnected or its platform does not report a field.
Administrators should inform employees which work devices are registered and why. Read the WAYSCloud privacy policy for information about how personal data is handled.
Troubleshooting
The device does not appear after a few minutes
- Check that installation completed on the device.
- Check that endpoint security, a proxy, or a network filter is not blocking the Meil MDM agent.
- On Windows, SmartScreen or Defender may need to allow the verified installation.
- On Linux, create a new one-time code if the previous code has expired and run the command again.
A field is missing
Some data depends on the platform or device hardware. Wait for another check-in, then check status again. Missing data does not by itself mean that the device has a security deviation.
